The goal of this research was to analyze the role of futures foresight, futures design, service innovation design and business design practices in sustainable business and sustainability strategy creation. The focus was to understand how strategy, business development, and sustainability professionals use these methods in their work, what kind of challenges they face, and what kind of best practices and success factors there are. Based on this knowledge, the study develops a practice-oriented concept for improving the existing theoretically well-founded frameworks of using futures foresight and service design by professionals for successfully embedding sustainability into a company’s strategy. This concept is titled “a concept of sustainable futures business design”. The analysis was done by building a theoretical framework of combining futures foresight and design, futures-oriented service innovation design, and business model innovation and design for sustainable business and value creation. The current futures foresight and design practices were studied through qualitative research by interviewing sustainability, strategy, and futures foresight experts in different companies in Finland. The research results show that by developing futures foresight and design capabilities and integrating foresight and design processes, companies could use the futures foresight information and results more extensively in several company functions for sustainable business. The results were used by creating a model for combining the processes between sustainable development and service innovations and business development. The purpose of the integrated concept is to enable easier processes and methods for analyzing sustainability value creation opportunities and developing sustainable business innovations with foresight and design tools. The concept is intended to serve as a basis for further development and adjustment to the needs of various companies in different industries....

Innovation Model for Agrivoltaics Business Development in Finland

Tämän opinnäytetyön tavoitteena oli luoda alustava innovaatiomalli maatalousaurinkosähköhankkeiden kehittämiseen Suomessa. Opinnäytetyön aihe kumpusi omasta kiinnostuksesta kestäviin liiketoimintamalleihin, energiamurrokseen ja maankäyttöön. Myös keskeisenä mielenkiinnon kohteena oli tarkastella potentiaalisia uusia ansaintamalleja maanomistajille sekä erityisesti maanviljelijöille, jotta he voivat ylläpitää kestävästi ja kannattavasti myös nykyistä maanviljelyliiketoimintaansa ja ruokaturvaa Suomessa. Tämä opinnäytetyö on toteutettu itsenäisesti, eikä tätä ole tehty kolmannen osapuolen toimeksiantona.
Tietoperustassa käsitellään maatalousaurinkosähköä yleisesti, sen historiaa sekä hyviä ja huonoja puolia sekä maanviljelijöiden mielipiteitä näihin liittyen ja mahdollisia tulevaisuuden näkymiä. Opinnäytetyössä käsitellään myös energiamurrosta ja Suomen hiilineutraaliustavoitteita sekä maankäyttöä tähän liittyen. Myös maatalouden nykytilaa Suomessa käsitellään ja käydään läpi Euroopan Unionin yhteistä maatalouspolitiikkaa (YMP, englanniksi Common Agricultural Policy = CAP). Opinnäytetyössä käydään myös läpi kestävää kehitystä sekä kestävien liiketoimintamallien kehittämistä.
Opinnäytetyön tavoitteen saavuttamiseksi luotiin kyselytutkimus, jonka avulla oli tavoite kerätä tietoa maanomistajien ja viljelijöiden mielipiteistä ja näkemyksistä maataloussähköhankkeisiin liittyen. Kyselyn avulla oli tarkoitus myös selvittää maanomistajien ja viljelijöiden sekä heidän maanviljelytoimintaansa liittyviä tekijöitä, joiden pohjalta oli tarkoitus mm. selvittää, mitä tekijöitä maanviljelijät arvostaisivat tärkeiksi liittyen maataloussähköhankkeisiin, mikäli he itse lähtisivät mukaan tällaiseen liiketoimintaan.
Tietoperustassa käsiteltyjen teemojen sekä kyselyn vastauksien pohjalta luotiin innovaatiomalli pohjautuen kestävän arvonluontimallin viitekehykseen maataloussähköhankkeille. Tuloksena myös tunnistettiin neljä keskeistä elementtiä, joiden pohjalta liiketoimintaa tulisi lähteä kehittämään yhdessä eri sidosryhmien kanssa. Maataloussähköhankkeet myös tarjoavat paljon jatkotutkimusaiheita niin teknistaloudellisista näkökulmista kuin maanviljelyn näkökulmasta....

Enhancing the Attendee Co-creation : a Case Study of Hackathon Concept Revamp

The research problem of this study concerns the co-creational events, and how improving the attendee experience could enhance the creation of open innovation. To address this issue, the purpose of this study is to explore the different elements, as well as the possible pitfalls of current the hackathon concept of the case company’s hackathon events. In evaluation and in concept creation phases the Hackathon Canvas (Duchateau, M. 2016) is used as a tool for creating a robust hackathon event concept. The theoretical framework supporting the study is based on the literature reviews on open innovation and co-creation, especially from the attendee experience point of view. Service design principles and tools are also applied in this study. In the course of the study, provisional personas were recognized and customer journeys were done for selected event attendees. The goal of the case study is to both guide the qualitative research principles and provide detailed examination of a single case. Additionally, action research method is applied by first analyzing the current state of the case company’s hackathon events; following the evaluation of the current limitations and furthermore in creating an improved and comprehensive concept for hackathons. The research data is largely based on semi-structured interviews with the organizers of the hackathon events in the case company. All the interviews were recorded, transcribed and analyzed carefully. Additionally, the author participated in one of the case company’s hackathons in order to form wider understanding by observing the course of the hackathon events. Analysis of the data lead to the following themes: involving the case company’s internal expertise into collaboration; the need for more carefully facilitated design processes, and more personalized attendee experience creation before, during and after the hackathon events. Based on the findings of this study, the initial proposal of the revamped hackathon concept, as well as the development ideas to enhance fruitful cooperation with the attendees of the hackathon events were delivered to the case company. Nevertheless, further research is needed in order to evolve the hackathon concept further – and to explore the new possibilities of collaboration when organizing the online hackathon events....
